"Visitors to Windermere have been urged not to swim after sightings of large blooms of potentially dangerous blue-green algae in England’s largest lake.

Blue-green algae can be lethal to animals including dogs and toxic to humans, causing skin rashes, headaches, vomiting and other symptoms.

Matt Staniek, a conservationist, said he had received messages from hundreds of locals and visitors to the Lake District expressing alarm at the levels of algae in recent days."
